Project Description
Approximately 900 young patients who have undergone total hip replacements have been identified and a database of information has been created to allow us to better study the causes that led to the replacement surgery. Of these patients we wish to contact patients with AVN, inflammatory arthritis and DDH for survivorship information. Also of importance is studying their altered anatomy and survivorship of the implant; with the intention of designing more appropriate implants for this population. The IRB #10059: Total Hip Replacement at HSS in Subjects under 35 Years of Age: Retrospective Chart Review and Patient follow up has been created to accomplish these goals.
The medical students’ role would be to finish collecting demographic data, preoperative diagnoses, select exam data and implant information from the medical records and private office charts with the oversight of Dr. Mark P. Figgie. Information will be collected from patients that were of 5–35 years of age that had total hip replacements at the Hospital for Special Surgery from 1986 forward. The medical student will also be responsible for contacting the patients and obtaining oral consent for quality of life questionnaires. The student will ask the patient the questionnaire questions and record the information. This data will be used for further analysis. Measurements will be made by Mark P. Figgie MD, from preoperative and postoperative radiographs and CT scans. We intend to compile the measurements for the patients who have undergone total hip replacement and will compare them with existing measurements from two collections of normal patients which will be taken from a database collection. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop better implants for this population.
