The first of its kind in the nation, the Osteoporosis Prevention Center at HSS was founded to help prevent and treat osteoporosis. Recognized by Congress as a model for other organizations to follow, it is the only center in New York City that is part of the New York State Osteoporosis Prevention & Education Program.
Osteoporosis is a disorder in which bones become less dense and more fragile, thereby increasing the risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is a “silent disease,” since there are no warning signs or symptoms until fractures occur. In the United States alone, an estimated 1.5 million fractures each year are attributed to low bone density. The risks of osteoporosis aren't relegated exclusively to women - males represent 20% of all cases.

The Osteoporosis Prevention Center (OPC) has recently been awarded facility accreditation for bone densitometry from the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). Earning this accreditation has permitted the OPC to join an elite group of facilities that has attained a significant measure of excellence in the provision of skeletal assessment services. ISCD accreditation further demonstrates to patients our commitment to meeting the highest standards achievable, based on current scientific knowledge and benchmarks in this field.
ISCD accreditation standards cover a wide variety of topics including personnel, DXA quality assurance and quality control, scan acquisition and analysis, scan interpretation and reporting, patient and referring physician education, privacy, business ethics and regulatory requirements.
