Yankees' Rivera Undergoes Surgery, Will Throw in Three Months

 

Bloomberg—October 7, 2008   

New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera underwent shoulder surgery today and will resume throwing in three months.

Rivera had the acromioclavicular joint in his right shoulder repaired by Dr. David Altchek at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, the team said in a statement.

The Yankees' closer pitched through the injury the entire Major League Baseball season, saving 39 games and compiling a 1.40 earned run average.

New York signed the 38-year-old right-hander to a three- year, $45 million contract in December. He has 482 saves, second-most in baseball history, during his 14-year career with the Yankees.
