Gonzalez's agent: shoulder surgery went "very well"

Adrian Gonzalez’s agent said that surgery on the Padres first baseman’s right shoulder went “very well” Wednesday and that Gonzalez should be ready to play at the beginning of the 2011 season.

John Boggs based his opinion on talking to Padres team physician Dr. Heinz Hoenecke. Boggs said Hoenecke talked to Mets physician Dr. David Altchek, who performed the surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Before the operation, Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer described the procedure as a “clean up” of the labrum.

“(Hoenecke) didn’t get technical (about the surgery),” Boggs said. “But the reports were that it went very well, as well as expected. The main thing I was looking for was his recovery. And his recovery’s supposed to be on par to (Gonzalez) playing at the beginning the season. There shouldn’t be any delays.”

Boggs said he was told it normally takes four months to recover from the surgery, which would be Feb. 20, about the time the Padres open spring training in Arizona.

In late September, Gonzalez said the shoulder injury had been bothering him since early May.
