Recognizing the growing interest in advanced regional anesthesia training, Dr. Gregory Liguori, Dr. James Beckman, and Mary Hargett initiated a project in 2001 to establish a core curriculum for all regional anesthesia fellowships programs. They created a template defining guidelines for regional anesthesia fellowships and distributed the template to regional anesthesia program directors, identified from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA). All program directors were asked to submit materials from their institutions and to provide input on the guidelines. Several program directors' meetings were held, and material was imported into these guidelines from a number of institutions. These guidelines were published in the May/June 2005 edition of the journal, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
As the number of fellowship programs in regional anesthesiology/acute pain medicine grew, the membership in this Group also grew dramatically. This Group continues to meet semi-annually, and works collaboratively, on an ongoing basis, on initiatives to enhance this advanced training experience. In 2011, this Group of Fellowship Directors marked its first decade, and published the second edition of the guidelines in the May-June 2011 issue of the journal, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
