In 1986, when Dr. Nigel Sharrock was appointed Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at HSS, regional anesthesia was used in less than 15% of all surgical procedures. In 2010, more than 85% of the surgical procedures at HSS employed regional anesthesia techniques. This change in practice can be directly attributed to Dr. Sharrock, who pioneered the regional anesthesia practice at HSS, believing it to be the safest practice for our orthopaedic surgery population.
33,192 OR anesthetics were performed in 2010. These numbers represent a 7% growth over the number of OR anesthetics in 2009. A review of statistics for the past five calendar years shows a 22% growth since 2006.
