Dr. Michael Gordon was selected as the 2010-2011 “Teacher of the Year” by this year’s Graduating Fellows at the Department’s annual Fellows’ Dinner on June 9, 2011. In presenting the award, the Fellows’ praised Dr. Gordon’s patience and commitment to teaching. This is the second time that Dr. Gordon has won this important award. He was also selected as Teacher of the Year by the 2006-2007 Fellows. Dr. Gordon was also the recipient of this prestigious award in 2007.

Congratulations to Dr. Douglas S. T. Green who was chosen as the 2010-2011 “HSS Teacher of the Year” by the graduating Anesthesiology Residents from Weill Cornell Medical College at their Graduation Dinner on June 10, 2011.
Dr. Carrie Guheen is the recipient of the 2011 “HSS Attending Anesthesiologists’ Award for Clinical Excellence”. Dr. Guheen graduated from the University of Connecticut Medical School and then entered the Anesthesia Residency Program at Weill Cornell Medical College, where she served as Chief Resident in her final year. Dr. Guheen was the recipient of Cornell’s Joseph F. Artusio Award for Outstanding Resident. During Dr. Guheen’s Fellowship, she worked on a number of educational initiatives, including research studies on the efficacy of neuraxial anesthesia and ultrasound-guided saphenous nerve blocks in the pediatric population with Dr. Kate DelPizzo. Dr. Guheen also presented an abstract at the 2011 National ASRA Meeting entitled: “Factors Influencing Unexpected Disposition After Orthopedic Ambulatory Surgery”. Dr. Guheen also participated as faculty at the ASRA Meeting. Dr. Guheen will be staying at HSS to join our Attending Staff upon completion of her fellowship.

Dr. Cassie Kuo is the recipient of the 2011 “Dr. Nigel E. Sharrock Award for Academic Excellence”. Dr. Kuo graduated from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and did her residency at Columbia University/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. During her Fellowship, Dr. Kuo wrote a book chapter on postoperative analgesia with Dr. Spencer Liu, participated in research on changes in anesthesia-related factors in ambulatory knee and shoulder surgery with Dr. Stavros Memtsoudis, the results of which were published in the journal Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. She also presented an abstract on trends in anesthetic variables in ambulatory surgery at the international Post Graduate Assembly of Anesthesiologists’ Meeting in December 2010. Dr. Kuo will be joining the Fair Oaks Anesthesia Practice in Virginia.

Dr. Richard King participated in a humanitarian mission to Guatemala for several days from June 4 - June 11, 2011. During the 7 days that Dr. King was in Guatemala, he provided anesthesia for 42 surgical procedures for the country’s indigent population in a rural setting.
